Where should
you ride?

ICON, ECMWF and GFS are compared for eight coasts around the island. Cameras, METAR and official daily observations remain separate and are never presented as wind at a specific launch.

CALCULATING

Finding the best spot

Comparing available models

Before travelling: data freshness · shore direction · gusts · camera · access/rescue · equipment and a riding partner.

The size is guidance for a typical freeride kite. Check your model's published wind range, actual shore conditions and instructor judgement; offshore wind lowers the score regardless of strength.

What does the index mean, and why does it stop at 96?+

This is a condition-fit index, not a probability percentage and not a safety guarantee.

  • 42% — wind strength fit
  • 27% — shore direction fit
  • 13% — gust stability
  • 13% — agreement across three models
  • 5% — precipitation

With a selected kite, the planner also checks power in average wind, gusts and lulls. Offshore wind, excessive gusts and rider-level limits cap the result.

For Russian points without a verified shore sector, the index is capped at 68/96 and means only a wind window for further checks. It is not a spot-safety assessment.

The ceiling of 96 is deliberate: the service cannot see launch obstacles, actual waves, equipment condition or the rider's condition. A score of 100 would look like a promise the system cannot make.

WHY THIS IS USEFUL

Not one forecast.
A forecast cross-check.

01

Do not present a reference as spot wind

No instant anemometer is connected for Mauritius kite shores. FIMP is an airport METAR, while official Le Morne, Rivière Noire, St Félix and Belle Mare values are 24-hour maxima.

Observations and cameras ↓
02

Cross-check three models

ICON, ECMWF IFS and GFS come through Open-Meteo from the sea grid cell beside the selected coast. The card shows their mean, so it cannot be compared one-to-one with Windguru's single GFS row.

Open‑Meteo ↗
03

Separate coasts and zones

Eight forecast grids separate the island geographically, but within Le Morne the model still cannot distinguish Kite Lagoon, Small Reef, Manawa and One Eye. Tide, swell, coral and rescue are checked separately; a green result is deliberately disabled.

Local zone guide ↗
How to read the score: the 0–96 index is a transparent heuristic, not a statistical probability. It compares kite size, weight, rider level, wind and gusts, the shore's working sector and spread across three models. Days 1–3 are more useful; days 4–5 are guidance and days 6–7 are an early signal to recheck before travelling.

VERIFIED LIVE LAYER

Mauritius: forecast, observations and cameras are different layers.

FIMP is a fresh airport METAR, not kite-beach wind. Mauritius Meteorological Services separately publishes 24-hour maxima for Le Morne, Rivière Noire, St Félix and Belle Mare: real stations, but not instant readings.
